George Nounesis will complete his second term as Director and Chairman of the Board of the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos” in June 2025 while in the same month starting his 3-year tenure as Chairman of the National Council for Research, Technology and Innovation. At “Demokritos,” he is credited with steering the Center toward emerging technologies, including the explosive growth of artificial intelligence programs, the founding of the Institute of Quantum Computing and Quantum Technology, and the development of infrastructure for advanced digital manufacturing.

He is also recognized for significantly expanding technology transfer activities by attracting private investment, supporting deep-tech startup entrepreneurship, and fostering close collaboration with the Hellenic Centre for Defence Innovation. Concurrently, during the 2021–2025 period, he has served as Alternate Chairman of the Hellenic Space Center.
