Fanis Papathanasiou is an anchor and senior diplomatic correspondent at ERT, the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation, with more than 30 years of experience reporting on global affairs, diplomacy, and major international conflicts. From the frontlines of the war in Ukraine—beginning with the 2014 annexation of Crimea—to the 2003 Iraq War and ongoing developments in the Middle East, he has consistently delivered in-depth coverage and analysis from key geopolitical hotspots, including Israel, Lebanon, and broader conflict zones. As ERT’s former United Nations and U.S.
Correspondent based in New York, and now leading its diplomatic coverage from Athens, he has anchored numerous international specials and live summit broadcasts, including UN, NATO, and EU meetings. He has conducted exclusive interviews with prominent world leaders and key global figures such as Donald J. Trump (prior to his presidency), George W. Bush, Mike Pompeo, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Christine Lagarde, Sanna Marin, Christiane Amanpour, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, and Ahmet Davutoğlu.
Alongside his diplomatic expertise, Papathanasiou has actively engaged with the world of emerging technologies and digital transformation, serving as a moderator and speaker at high-level conferences on innovation, AI, and the future of media and governance. Notably, he was on stage at the MIT Global Startup Workshop (MIT GSW) 2023 in Athens, where he moderated a dynamic discussion on the digital future of Greece with Minister of Digital Governance Kyriakos Pierrakakis and Lars Rasmussen, co-founder of Google Maps. His work and analysis have been widely featured by international media outlets such as CNN, BBC, CGTN, and Al Jazeera. He holds a Master’s degree in Digital Media, Communication, and Journalism from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
